The acronym A.I.A.D.S. means
"Italian Association Friends of the Scimitar”
Non-Profit.
The A.I.A.D.S was conceived on the 30th of September, 2006
exactly one year after a 51 year old lady was diagnosed
with a genetic rare anomaly called “Scimitar Syndrome”
or Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR).
The A.I.A.D.S is formed by a group of friends who, during
a difficult moment in Rita's
life (this
is the lady’s name) gather around her in order to
help and give her strength. To realize, at 51, to be born
with a genetic anomaly would be a shock for anyone but if
the disease is rare as well, it is truly falling into a
black hole. Thanks to the Internet, Rita and her
husband were able to understand
what it was all about, and the more they understood, and
the more the anguish increased because there were no points
of reference with other sick persons with whom being able
to exchange information and feelings. The anger even increased
for having been born with a malformation which the statistics
indicate 1 to 3 100,000 newborn.
Of these 3 newborn usually 2 die shortly after birth if
the syndrome is not immediately diagnosed and operated on.
When Rita was born, in 1954, this syndrome was not yet known
and therefore those 2 of 3 newborn surely died and Rita
is the 1 who remained alive in even though she did not undergo
surgery in those times….why?
Probably…. Rita in these long and difficult months
has asked herself many times: “Why all this to me?”
and she found the reply… by creating this Association!
The A.I.A.D.S. is a Non-Profit making Organization
“…Mom if your child does not eat, does not gain
weight, is always affected by bronchitis and tonsillitis,
tires easily …
